Autism Medication and Uninformed Opinions

Autism medication is at the center of some controversy, and, like most controversial issues, the ruckus is usually the result of nothing. In fact, there probably isn't very much controversy for autism medications at all. More likely, it's all an illusion designed to stir up sentiment in the public.

Children, Medicine, Behavior, and the Media

As anyone who has followed the controversy with ADHD knows, there will always be those who consider providing medication to a child with a behavior problem to be a horrible thing. What is most sad, however, is the significant number of reports criticizing this medicinal therapy for children that also seem to take great glee in denying the actual existence of the disease and prefer to put the blame on doctors for creating a 'fake' disorder.

In some instances, there are those who actually have the gall to spread the conspiracy theory that many of these disorders have been invented so as to bring forth a political agenda. Now, how this political agenda is going to result in any party getting elected is mind boggling, but, as long as there are those willing to pay for the books that put this nonsense forward, authors will make the claims. Besides, the authors don't really believe what they are saying -- they just say ANYTHING to make a sale.

The Negative Results

The negative result of this attitude against autism medication or other forms of behavioral medication is that it allows individuals who have no medical background to shape public opinion on an issue. Then again, it would be arrogant to assume that this only effects autism medication. The reality is that most opinions sent forth to the public are done so by people who have no knowledge of the subject at hand.

How Do Opinions Form?

The only way one should form an opinion on the subject of autism medication is from those people who are highly knowledgeable in the subject and speak from experience. Do not accept the words of pundits no matter how 'good' their advice sounds on the surface. The subject of autism medication is far too serious to be taken lightly, but, sadly, many people make light of it. This is unfortunate as it only results in the children being harmed, because there are those who really do not care, as long as they are making money.
