Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Range Of Disorders
Autism spectrum disorder is a range of behavioral and developmental disorders that results from combinations of certain traits. Autism spectrum disorder ranges from low-functioning autism to high function autism to normal behavior to possibly hyper socialization.
An autism spectrum disorder is considered a pervasive developmental disorder, which means it interferes with normal developmental abilities such as speech and communication. Autism spectrum disorders are not specific developmental disorders such as dyslexia. It is important to note that many people who have an autism spectrum disorder are affected so much by the disorder that they wind up in dire poverty.
Affects Areas Of Functioning
An autism spectrum disorder is a psychological and developmental disorder that affects many areas of functioning. These areas include language, communication, self-help skills, motor coordination, and scholastic achievement. In some individuals, the symptoms may be immediately noticeable. In others, however, the symptoms may not be noticeable at all upon first meeting that person.
Many people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder lead very normal lives. In fact, many people with an autism spectrum disorder lead such normal lives that they are often not diagnosed until late adolescence or later. The disorders are usually diagnosed following a series of psychiatric tests.
Not Disabled
It is important to stress that people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder are not disabled; their thought process is just a little different from everyone else's. There are many different degrees of severity and no two people are alike.
Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder may have a little difficulty interacting with, and doing as well scholastically as, normal children. It all depends on the severity. Individuals with the disorder may not read as well or do as well on tests as other children. They also may not be able to socialize successfully. This is due to the fact that their brains process and store information differently.
Learning Is Key
By learning about the various degrees of autism spectrum disorders, people in the individual's lives such as teachers, siblings, parents, and friends will be able to help the individual cope with their disorder. Some have shown that with intense therapy and practice they are able to 'fit in' and socialize normally with the outside world. By learning about the disorder, we can better help deal with those who have it. With patience, practice, and guidance, people with autism spectrum disorder can live a normal and productive life.
